About Us

What started out so innocently nearly 30 years ago as the desire to just have a “really good” bird dog – (OK maybe I was greedy and wanted TWO really good bird dogs )– has evolved into a lifelong love affair and passion with the Labrador retriever. Specifically the “naturally pointing” strains of the Labrador retriever.

In our early years we primarily hunted and competed in Field Trial and Hunt Test events. Upon moving to Central South Dakota we were introduced to a whole new challenge when new friends introduced us to the Ft. Pierre National Grasslands – a 120,000 acre parcel of public land that is home to extensive populations of native Sharptail Grouse and Prairie Chickens.

Growing up in more traditional Ringneck Pheasant country this was a whole new world - the wide open spaces and need to cover more ground simply seem to lend it to wide ranging pointing dogs. So we acquired them, setters, pointers, shorthairs, you name it we owned them. But something was missing. While those dogs could find birds and admittedly were fun to hunt behind, they just didn’t have the personality and desire to please that my labs had.

While working as an editor of a regional outdoor publication I was invited to the initial pointing Labrador hunt test that was hosted by Larry Mueller who at that time was gun dog editor for Outdoor Life Magazine. While the quality of dog work was no where near what we consider even average today – a spark was ignited.....I could have my versatile “natural retrieve everything loving family member Labrador dog” and have a pointing bird finding machine all in one package. Now that was something I could get excited about!!!

And so the journey began – and continues to this day. Over the years we have been able to identify strains within the Labrador population that naturally point and have been able to concentrate those characteristics to make them extremely predictable while maintaining the retriever characteristics and personalities that have made the Labrador retriever the most popular breed in America. Waterfowl, upland birds, retriever games, hunt tests, yes even field trials, you name it the Pointing Labrador can do it all and then still curl up with the family as a true family companion.

That has become our Passion and our Purpose – to share our Pointing Labradors with you. It is an opportunity and responsibility that we take very seriously. With the support and help of our children and family, Kathy and I are proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to sharing the lasting memories and friendships that we have experienced with you.
